Today would be the first day out of my home country… and all on my own! I decided to make a difference to underprivileged communities…and boy, did I! My first day getting into South Africa was a total pleasure. I thought that I would be stranded at the airport all on my own, but before I even got out of the terminal, there was someone waiting for me with my name on the name board. We then took a short city tour and left for the project!

Once I arrived at the project, I was totally amazed. The accommodation was way better than expected and the food was superb (there goes my diet)! We were given an orientation, our uniform, and then taken to our accommodation.

The next day would be the start of an exciting adventure for me!

The next morning, I was up bright and early quite excited (and nervous) for my first day of volunteering. After a light breakfast, we were taken to a local underprivileged school where there are about 70 kids aged 5 to 15 years old. Many of them walk at least 5 kilometres to school everyday…and in most cases on an empty stomach! We assisted them at the school by cooking and feeding the kids as well as giving them some much needed attention. We also showed them how to play cricket, native to my home country.

This was just one day in my exciting adventure and it was something which I would never forget. The rest of my 3 weeks were unbelievable and everyday seemed to be a fulfilling experience.

I would recommend this to anyone else out there who would like to make a difference to people’s lives!
